She is not my Mother, She is my Maa

Just a few days back i dedicated a post to my mom on her birthday. So, as soon as i read this prompt I knew I wanted to write a letter to my Maa, my mother-in-law. So here’s a letter from a punjabi bahu to her bengali sasu maa.

Dear Maa,

The day i first met you was the day me and your son got engaged and I am thankful to you for trusting your son and me so much that you agreed to “US” without even meeting me, the girl who was going to be with your son for the rest of his life. This was a perfect 10/10 In the sasu maa test and you continued scoring thereon.

You are my teacher. You have taught me a lot and continue to do so be it draping a saree the bengali way, making my husbands favourite posto, teaching me bengali, taking me to pujo pandals and so much more.

You are my friend. I love attacking your saree collection like i would attack my mom’s. I love our tea time gossip session after i come back from work. I love the fact that you don’t judge me for waking up late or wearing what i want or not praying everyday. I am lucky you like to chill too.

You love me. You treated me like your own daughter since day one and a pampered one. You have always prioritised my comfort even in the smallest instance. Be it always giving me the least complicated pieces of fish to eat or caressing my hair through my migraines. I am grateful to your son for giving me you.

Maa, things are not always good between us, I do disagree with you at times but you always keep your calm. I have behaved like a “bahu” at times but u have been my maa in every way every time. I definitely want my son to grow up to be like your son.
